Over/About Mark

Mark Schalekamp (’68) is a writer and journalist. His debut was in ’11 with his first novel, The Parvenu, from which movie rights were purchased by Eyeworks. His second book, non-fiction, is about creating your ideal work: Make Work of Your Dream

Youropeans! is his last project, in every EU capital, he interviewed 8 people: a doctor, hairdresser, entrepreneur, sex worker, local celebrity, police officer, immigrant and artist. By sharing their stories, he hoped to contribute to Europe’s social cohesion. In March ‘16, This is Europe, a report of this two-year tour d’Europe was published in Dutch and English, see www.youropeans.eu.

As a journalist he works free-lance for several newspapers and magazines, Dutch and German: NRC Handelsblad, Volkskrant, Quote Magazine, Tagesspiegel. He writes about a wide scale of subjects, from politics & society, opinion pieces, sports and travel. Most of his travel articles you find on this site.

Before becoming a writer and journalist, Schalekamp worked for a bank, as a TV editor and as a lawyer before in ’99 he founded Robin Good: a company with a triple mission: to make money, to have fun and to make the world a nicer place. Robin Good stimulated CSR –years before it was in vogue- by linking corporates to social causes in an active way through projects and events. Trying to put their social words into action. In ’07 he sold his company, by then an organisation with a staff of 20 and a sounding list of customers.

Schalekamp’s company, books and projects have drawn quite a lot of media attention, in the Netherlands and abroad. And when he feels like it, he also takes part in national debates through written articles or interviews on topics varying from Europe, the role of the media, the failing FIFA to the dubious role of banks.
